Photographing the young in the outdoors

I love taking pictures in nature, especially in the summer. The beach, on a hiking trail, but also on the ski resort. Any outside activity where the young are preoccupied with a friend. This creates fantastic possibilities to freeze action and go home to find some keepers.

Long focal length lenses are ideal for staying away further, and not being a distraction. Most people, behave differently when they know a camera is pointing at them, and for those kids who are not used to a camera, it works wonders with a 75mm or longer focal length.

For the young that are used to it, like my own son, one can create truly stunning and often dramatic photographs with a short-wide angle lens, by coming right up to their faces.

Wide angle, open aperture lenses are gorgeous for portrait style photography in the outdoors.
